Sonfjället National Park: The Realm of Bears and the Beauty of Mountain Farm Culture
Sonfjället National Park, located in the heart of Härjedalen, is a unique and beautiful mountain area established as early as 1909, making it one of the first national parks in Europe. The park is known as one of the most important areas for bears in Scandinavia. Despite the large bear population, bears are shy and rarely seen, but their presence can be noticed through signs such as droppings and excavated anthills. The area also hosts other animal species such as lemmings, reindeer, moose, and a rich bird life, including golden plovers and ptarmigans. With a bit of luck, visitors might also spot rough-legged buzzards and golden eagles.
The park also offers insights into the local mountain farm culture, with live mountain farms like Nyvallen, which have been operating since the 1700s. Nyvallen, Nysätern, and Dalsvallen also serve as starting points for hikes in the area. Visitors are encouraged to follow the park’s rules and regulations to protect both nature and wildlife.
